My family and I stayed at the Henderson Lodge for our Christmas celebration. We had an absolutely amazing time. There was plenty of space for all of us to fit. We enjoyed the fire pit and the multiple levels in the home. The beds were comfy and the house itself was very cozy. We highly recommend staying at this cabin. There was around 20 of us and we all enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely be back. Thank you Henderson Lodge for an unforgettable time.

Privacy provided relaxation, but close enough to do hiking, shopping, etc. Also close enough to find emergency dental care that was needed!!

Great Weekend Away With Friends
11 of us stayed in this house for a long weekend and it was perfect for our group. Lots of space, beds, huge hot tub, and nearby many hikes and wildlife. We were told there would be firewood and it was not delivered until our final day which was a bummer since we would have liekd to enjoy fires the other two nights, but overall it was a great rental.
Julie - Posted: 10/7/2024
Julie, thank you for your feedback. We are glad to hear that the home offered enough space and enjoyable amenities for your group. We are sorry to hear about the firewood and will ensure this is checked during property inspections. If you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Beautiful house in quiet remote location
This house is so pretty! And the pictures are accurate! It was very clean, and we loved our stay! The driveway way was a little much for us Midwest flat paved road kind of people, but we did just fine. So quiet and picturesque. We had a nice relaxing vacation here. I would absolutely recommend this house!
Sue N. - Posted: 9/18/2024
Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled that you found the house just as pretty as the pictures and enjoyed a clean, relaxing stay. We understand the driveway might have been a bit of an adjustment, especially for Midwest flatlanders, but we're glad it didn’t hinder your experience! It’s great to hear that you had a peaceful vacation. We truly appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you back soon!

The house is very nice. The kitchen could use a few updates on the appliances, especially needing some more frying pans honestly, the only issue with the house is the gravel road getting up to the house. Other than that it was very peaceful and we had a great time.
Kristie - Posted: 9/13/2024
Thank you for your review! We’re glad to hear that you had a peaceful and enjoyable stay. We appreciate your suggestions about the kitchen appliances and will look into adding more frying pans to better equip the space. We understand that the gravel road can be a bit of a challenge, but we’re happy that it didn’t take away from your overall experience. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

We came with a family of 18! The house suited us beautifully! We had most of the kids upstairs in the loft with girls on one side and boys on the other. All of the bedrooms had very comfortable beds. 3 bedrooms had their own private bathrooms which was really nice. The property is secluded enough the kids could run around outside without disturbing anyone. We would gladly stay again!
Eileen D. - Posted: 8/13/2024
Thank you so much for your kind review! We’re thrilled to hear that our home accommodated your large family gathering so well. It’s great to know that the loft setup worked perfectly for the kids and that everyone found the beds comfortable. We're glad you appreciated the privacy of the bedrooms with their own bathrooms and that the secluded location allowed the kids to play outside freely. Your positive feedback means a lot to us, and we would be delighted to welcome you all back for another stay in the future!

Amazing mountain getaway!
Could not be any happier…Hensley Hollow Lodge was fantastic!!! We were so pleasantly surprised at how a home that can accommodate/slerp 22 was truly spacious enough to be together without being on top of each other and the views were spectacular! Beds (& pillows) were very comfortable. Easy drive (10-12 minutes) to a grocery. Kitchen was well stocked with anything you might need (2 coffee pots and even 2 crock pots!). Having a second full fridge on the lower level for beverages or food overflow (to cut down on the grocery runs) was a big plus! Hope to be able to return for another visit soon!

Magical weekend
I was originally worried that the group of 14 would feel a bit crowded - not at all! My only suggestion is to stock the foosball table with balls. Other than that the space was perfect.

Fantastic house for a weekend getaway with friends. The proximity to the south gate of Shenandoah was a huge benefit; 30 min drive and you're at the start of the best hikes in the park. We were very happy with the size of the place for 17 people. The kitchen was the star of the show. We gathered around the huge peninsula for all our meals. As far as amenities we especially enjoyed the hot tub, fire pit, and the Blackstone cooktop.
Drive approach is steep and bumpy but disregard any review that says it's not safe. We had multiple sedans in our group make it up just fine, albeit slowly. It was a dry October weekend however with no snow or rain.
There are beds for 22 which is great but it's worth noting that 8 of the beds are upstairs in a loft situation (open to main floor/kitchen area). This was not an issue for us. Hopefully you're booking this house with people you like and won't mind as well.
Highly recommend this house!

Friend Fourth of July Stay in Shenandoah
We loved staying at this beautiful lodge in a perfect location in Shenandoah National Park. The home was beautiful, clean and appointed with all the necessities we needed. It was pet friendly, and even though we were bringing 2 black labs ourselves, we were skeptical of the quality of the house for our high-brow bunch and it was PERFECT! Comfy beds. Quiet and remote - but close to park entrance, grocery and more. We hope to be back! TripForth was a wonderful host!!

Spacious and comfortable
The property is very spacious, able to sleep our several friends comfortably. The kitchen is well stocked and the beds are comfortable. The hot tub is also quite large. The living room is very spacious and the views from those large windows are to die for. My only suggestion to the manager is that the game room machines were in poor condition - the foosball table has broken handles, the darts are mostly broken and the pool table sticks were broke. However upon communication with the manager, we received good pool sticks.
Danny - Posted: 2/8/2023
Danny, we are so glad to hear that the situation with the pool sticks was resolved for you during your stay. It is great to hear that your stay went well with us other than the items mentioned in your review. We are very apologetic regarding those items in the game room. Since your stay, we are in the process of addressing all noted items, other than the pool sticks that were already brought out to the property. Thank you for all of your feedback and we hope to host you again in the future!

AMAZING. Stay. All of My family hadn’t been together in over 13 years and this place was big enough to sleep all 20 of us comfortably. My mom I I don’t think has had that much fun cooking in the kitchen for all her siblings, children, and grand babies ever. The views were wonderful, the location was off the grid just enough to feel disconnected and enjoy the moments but close enough to get into town if you needed anything. The house was beautiful, the details were just amazing. We look forward to going back another time. Also we loved saying, “follow the signs to Hensley hollow”!! Thank you for sharing your space with us to create precious moments.

Beautiful location!
The house was beautiful and well stocked. All of the bedrooms and bathrooms were clean. It was less clean under beds and couches, as well as the dishes in the kitchen. Since we had a dog, we had to clean the debris under things so she wouldn’t eat things. The property managers were wonderful to work with! The views were stunning and the cabin was gorgeous. It would be nice to have on the description the steepness of the driveway just to give people a heads up. Overall we have an amazing stay and would come back!

Great mountain getaway, a truck or suv to get to the cabin is highly recommended . I have an f150 and still punctured a tire on the way down the mountain on the last day. Solitude is what your paying for however. Only negative I experienced other than that was the cleaning crew arrived 20-30 minutes before our designated check out time. Cabin was much nicer than we even expected! Extremely spacious. You could easily sleep over 20 people in this cabin comfortably. I was a bit nervous that there weren’t pictures of the bedrooms and bathrooms but all of them were very nice and clean and beautiful. Only one issue the entire stay and the customer service was AWESOME! Definitely recommend. Only thing to be aware of is it is a bit of a steep hill so if there had been a bunch of snow we might have had a little trouble getting up the driveway since our vehicles weren’t 4WD. Cabin had a fully stocked kitchen with everything you needed to cook except the food and that was awesome for our big crew to cook breakfast with! Many of us were already talking about coming back next year!! Thanks for the quality stay, and if your thinking about stayin, go ahead and book it!!

Perfect, with excellent views
Beautiful Cabin at the top of a mountain. Great location, Beautiful views , all the privacy, a nice hike around the mountain, hot tub/pool table/games/etc and a home well stocked with everything you can ask for. We were a big group so all the bedrooms and 4 bathrooms came in handy. The 2 listed bedrooms in the upper level loft have doors, but are open as stated - so does not have privacy. The drive up to the cabin the first time is tricky, follow instructions. But you can rely on Google maps - takes you to the home (Not sure how anybody will get up there is bad weather!!). Home was even stocked with baby bassinettes, high chairs, etc. Wish the owner could find a solution for the poor Wi-fi.

Ram, we are glad to hear that you and your travel party enjoyed the views and unique home features at Hensley Hollow Lodge! We also appreciate you bringing up the wifi; our team is currently looking into alternate service options to hopefully improve this amenity in the future. Thanks for leaving a review!

Family Celebration
Loved our time at Hensley Hollow! Family (80 to 8 months) from all corners of the US came together to celebrate GiGi’s 80th birthday as well as graduations and welcoming the newest members of the family. House was well equipped and with very comfortable beds. Enjoyed spending nights by the fire pit gazing at the stars. Spent many hours playing foosball and pool. We are a very competitive family. Each morning while relaxing out on the deck was visited by a hummingbird. Went through the firewood and Chuck was responsive and delivered a load the next day!

Another great stay
This was our fourth trip back to Hensley Hollow Lodge. It continues to be an enjoyable, relaxing place to stay and get away from the busy world. The upgrades that have been done since our last trip added to the comfort. New furniture, new paint, a new fireplace all helped improve the HHL experience. The wifi has been upgraded as well, and while getting 1 to 3 Mbs per second may seem very slow to most people, it's pretty impressive for being out in the country, up on the side of a mountain. It provided enough connectivity for family members to get homework done for school (college), stay connected to their friends, and surf some videos for the kids. The owners and the maintenance staff were very communicative and responsive. The family overwhelmingly voiced the desire to come back next year for trip #5. That should be a pretty good hallmark for the quality of HHL.

A relaxing getaway
Overall this was a great place to stay. We enjoyed the amenities including the hot tub, fire pit, and pool table. The children enjoyed looking through the huge dvd/vhs collection and found a few favorites. It is very secluded, so be prepared for at least a 15 minute drive to get anywhere. (We didn’t mind it). It was close to Shenandoah National Park which was great for hiking and Shenandoah River Adventures for tubing and kayaking. The owner and property manager were very responsive before and during our stay.

50th Anniversary Getaway
We had a great stay at this house to celebrate a 50th Anniversary. Very clean and well stocked with plenty of room for everyone. It is definitely off the beaten path so be prepared to travel some unpaved mountainous roads. We had gorgeous weather and wished more of the windows and doors had screens to let in the fresh mountain air, but that was our only complaint. Overall it was a wonderful place for our family to gather and celebrate.

Scenic Lodge Near Shenandoah Park
My hiking group based in Indiana typically goes to the Great Smoky Mountains but wanted to vary our spring trip by trying out Shenandoah National Park. We stayed for three nights and went hiking during the day. The lodge was very comfortable for six and could have easily accommodated more. Location was fantastic for park access; it was maybe fifteen minutes to the Swift Run Gap entrance. Clean rooms, comfortable beds, plenty of space and a fantastic view. Highly recommend!

This rental was just as described! The views were breathtaking and the rental had everything a family would need. The rental was very clean and the beds were comfortable. There was plenty of space for our large family. We enjoyed making s’mores around the fire pit and made use of the game room. Would definitely come back!

Fun Friends Trip
The house is amazing and remote. You have alot of space to accommodate a large group. I had 16 and a few pets. They are a stricter on check out time (a large penalty every 15 minutes you are late) but we checked out in time. They have cameras on the outside of the house. The dishwasher is not great. It only cleaned some things on our first wash so we had to leave some things in there to wash again. It is a 15 minute drive into town and 25 to the Shenandoah National Park. The roads are pretty bumpy so you may need a 4wd or awd in the snow or maybe rain too. It is a steep incline so there is not alot of flat space/turf to play things on. We made do with the parking lot to play some frisbee games. We used almost all the amenities (hot tub, grill, patio swing, firepit, game pool, etc). We had such a great time. Thanks for the welcome smores ingredients and bottle of wine. You cannot run more than 2 water things (shower, dishwasher, washer, etc) at a time so you definitely have to plan that a little. The listing is a little inaccurate calling the game room a bedroom. It’s just a common space with a bed that the other 2 bedrooms down there has to walk through in order to get upstairs. There’s not any real privacy there. They didn’t mind since it was quieter down there but I had told them they were getting their own bedroom bc the listing said it was such. Cell service is definitely kind of spotty and internet is slow so don't expect to do too much with work. My husband was able to do some homework for his masters program. It is definitely a get away spot from the world. 2 dollar farm fresh eggs not too far from the house. We saw some deer in the morning and evening. It's really cool that when you are on skyline drive, you can actually see the house at the hensley overlook.

Thank you, Cara, for the positive references in your review. As a point of clarification and per the listing description, the 7 bedrooms are all separate rooms with lockable doors. The two rooms in the loft have partial walls, but still have lockable doors. The game room, central loft area, and living room sleepers/futons are in addition to the bedroom count and the listed guest capacity. Also, our road has recently had the seasonal maintenance completed. Thank you again for choosing our property for your stay. We are glad you had a great time and we welcome you back anytime.

Wonderful respite!
We had an amazing weekend at this beautiful home. The game room was lots of fun for kids and adults alike! The home was well stocked and the owners were very responsive! The view and hot tub were stunning. It was such a relaxing getaway. The one thing I would point out for any families planning on renting this home: the 2 top floor bedrooms with 4 beds in each do have doors, but they aren’t closed off with four walls. They are more of a loft setup and have one side open to the common area. They are beautiful and fun rooms for the kids to pile in, but you can’t plan on much hanging out on the main floor for adults after kids’ bedtime because the noise carries right into the loft area. The adults in our group just hung out in the game room on bottom floor after kids’ bedtime and it was fine, but just wanted to clarify for potential renters with young kids.

Wonderful Mountain Getaway ( but bring your own soap:) )
We spent the weekend here and had a blast. Our kids went for nature hikes and loved seeing the deer and wildlife. Our dog was obsessed with tracking all of the amazing smells. I was pretty partial to the hot tub and fire pit. The house itself was perfect for space. Kids loved the bunk beds and all of the fun games. They loved seeing a VHS tape for the first time too. The kitchen had ever thing we could have wanted. Only thing to wish for was we didn't realize there wasn't any soap in the bathrooms so bring your own and you'll be all set! Andrea was wonderful to work with as well. Very communicative and responsive.

This house was truly amazing. The pictures did not do justice. My family of 11 all slept comfortably. It was truly TONS of space for us to move around and not feel cramped. My favorite part was the jacuzzi. The only issue we struggled with was the Wi-Fi. Other than than that we had an amazing time. We did have to leave earlier than expected because of the snow. The location of the house mixed with snow was not in agreeance. The driveway is super steep so please take your time and be careful!!

The home exceeded our expectations. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen had everything one would need, the fire pit was close to the house and the jacuzzi was a hit. The view was great and all in all, we had a great time. The house is a short drive from Massanutten which visited twice. The grocery store is less than 15 minutes away and there are plenty of restaurants nearby as well. The owners were very responsive throughout the process, this meant a lot to us. If you want to get away and still be close to some action, this is the perfect place!

Great Holiday
Just completed a week stay post Christmas at the HHH. We had a wonderful time. Three big things,1) all communication with the (new) owners was excellent and prompt 2) everything worked (appliances, hot tub, lights, TV's) and 3) the steep driveway is not nearly as daunting as it looks. I say that as some of our party was concerned, but by the second day, all drivers in different types of cars were zipping up and down with no concerns. Kitchen was stocked better than most places we stay, the new bedding was very nice and paper towels, toilet paper and trash bags were more than adequate to handle our party of 12-13 with no problem. Place was very clean when we arrived and instructions throughout to understand the well, lights, hot tub and requirements to use the fire pit were well done. Two things to point out, 1) the new owner has just taken over and it clearly in the middle of improving or upgrading some of the furniture and soft goods (nice new bedding)., so I expect this aspect to improve. 2) in this part of Virginia in the mountains, there are stink bugs,. Some get in the house and the detailed instructions in the house book explain that. We swept a few out and vacuumed some up, but I have had these creatures in many houses I have rented around Luray, Front Royal and other parts of the Shenandoah, so don't be surprised to see them. Would definitely rent this place again. Twelve is a good number for this place, over that it may be tight on bathrooms, even if there are plenty of beds, and again, I always like to deal with a motivated and engaged owner such as Andrea.

Thanksgiving Getaway
This house was great! Secluded up on the mountain with a beautiful view. It was spacious enough for our family for Thanksgiving dinner and for everyone to have their own space. One night we even had a visit from a bear. But as it got closer to the house and as we strained our eyes through the darkness we realized it was a cow that wondered up the hill lol.

Grab this venue for your family get-togethers!
This very large log cabin is perched at the top of a hill in a valley very near Skyline Drive. It was very clean and had every item you could think of for a large gathering -- large amount of kitchen items (in big sizes), baby items, bedrooms, board games, DVDs. This home is itching for family Thanksgivings or get togethers. We did not partake in the hot tub or the kayaks, but all are there to keep folks busy.

Great Visit to Shenandoah Valley
Beautiful cabin! Well appointed with all kitchen supplies you would ever need! The driveway is very steep and unsteady if muddy... 4wd is a must! Otherwise we enjoyed the beauty and nature! The deer came right up to the cabin in the evening to sleep. What a beautiful sight to wake up to 20 deer sleeping on the hillside! Beds were comfy and (despite the ladybug invasion) the cabin was very clean and tidy! Wish we could have stayed longer!

Great to get away from it all!
We had a lovely time at the lodge. The kitchen was VERY well stocked (rice cooker, lots of pans, etc) which was great since we brought all our meals and did lots of cooking. Plenty of activities too -- air hockey, pool, darts, and more game systems and movies that we could possibly watch. Loved the movie selections! Wifi was great and some of our cell phones worked in the house but most worked out on the deck just better. Enough to stay connected but not too connected ;) Thank you for being a great getaway location!

Hensley Hollow Heaven
The lodge is really quite amazing. Million dollar views. Everything you need to survive your stay including the best well water I've ever had. My kids even filled up all of our water bottles so we would have some for our return home! The house is very large. I lost count of how many people it can sleep. 4 full bathrooms but because of the water system, you can only run 3 water sources at a time. I would imagine this would make scheduling showers for a large group a bit difficult but our group of 8 didn't run into any problems. The kitchen cookware is beat up but adequate. There's a layer of dust here and there but the spots that I expect to be clean like bedrooms and bathrooms were very clean. Mr. Ed and his wife and crew were still cleaning when we arrived at the 4pm check in time but we didn't mind waiting 20 min while they finished up. The lodge is within 20-45 min of great hiking, mountain biking and river attractions. The cows and goats are hoot. You'll also see deer, hummingbirds and hawks. And at night, it seems as if you can see the entire galaxy of stars. I'm very happy with our stay! Thank you Ed and Meshiel.

Beautiful place for a secluded getaway
Great communication with the owners in advance. Gorgeous property! Super secluded but proximity to Shenandoah was perfect. Met the owner on our way in and she was super friendly. Told us they were cleaning with UV. Everything was as described in the listing. Well equipped kitchen. Hot tub was perfect for the cooler nights on the mountain. The bench swing was a pleasant place to sit for making phone calls, as cell service worked better outside. Ample seating for dining. We took full advantage of the movie collection and the downstairs games. The second fridge was perfect for keeping our drinks and snacks while we hung out down there and played cards and darts and pool in the evenings. Not the most updated but beautiful rustic getaway from the city!

Excellent Summer Retreat
Two families with boys and girls ranging from 8-16 had a great time here mid-summer There is quick easy access to Skyline Drive and dozens of hiking trails as well as quick access to the Shenandoah River for canoeing and tubing. The house is well stocked with most everything that you would need except food. The house may be slightly dated, but everything was clean and very well maintained. The house is impressively well equipped with a hot tub, fire pit, a great pool table, two refrigerators, an adequate (dated) kitchen, and very nice, large grill and griddles on the covered porch. There were also 100's of games, DVDs, and VHS movies and numerous TV's for rainy days. The house was plenty big enough for our two families. I think that we could have comfortably had another family stay with us, but beyond 12 people I think the house might start to feel a little crowded and loud. The owners were exceptionally accommodating and responsive to our needs, fixing pool cues within hours of us breaking them, providing canoes and kayaks, life vests and even purchasing a trailer hitch to accommodate our car. We had a great time and the kids are already asking to go back. One note, and something which I actually appreciated, is that there is spotty cell service at the house and in the mountains, and limited speed internet access at the house. It was fine for checking e-mail, but the kids could not play their on-line games. This worked out great for me and, to my surprise, there were no melt-downs or blow-ups; There was plenty to do to keep everyone occupied. We will definitely return.

Hensley Hollow Lodge: Excellent Stay!
I have taken a group of guys from work on a weekend getaway every Spring and Fall in Virginia over the past several years and this was one of our favorite stays! As an organizer, I was pleased by the little things like good signage to find the house, plenty of parking, excellent instructions inside the house and online about how to use the fire pit, hot tub, and even which drawers in the kitchen to find needed items. Some guys went golfing, others to a nearby town, and I personally enjoyed the South River Falls hike off of Skyline drive which was only a 6 mile drive from the house. I highly recommend this hike as it goes down the mountain along a large stream and ends at a spectacular waterfall view. The house was clean and comfortable and we loved the view! The fire pit looks small in the pictures, but it is plenty big for a large group of people to enjoy. Lots of TVs and games to enjoy during the down time. I highly recommend this location for family or friend getaways. As I shared pictures with people at work, some of them shared that they had taken family to the same spot and loved it, too!

Quiet and Peaceful
The house is lovely. Having two full size refrigerators was much appreciated by the 7 women who stayed Columbus day weekend. The linens were soft and smelled very fresh. We all commented on them. The only problem was one car (very low to the ground) got stuck in the gravel attempting to get to the house. It was good that there was a place to back down to and park safely. If there had not been other vehicles that could make it all the way uo, then getting the supplies to the house would have been extremely difficult. I say this just so visitors will know to be prepared. If you chose to go out and about, I suggest Brix and Columns Winery. It was beautiful and welcoming. If you want peace and quiet, nature, and s'mores, this is the place for you.

Great Retreat Gettaway!
I brought 12 college students and 2 adults up to Hensley Hallow Lodge and it was the perfect setting for helping these students to get away from the stress and anxieties of college life. The property is truly a sight to behold, with a spacious kitchen/dining/living area, multiple beds and bedrooms, and the bathrooms were all able to be shared as well. We lost power due to a storm, and Shorters have clear, detailed instructions for when this occurs. We could not find any candles, but a trip to Food Lion was only 15 minutes away. Per their request, I immediately observed the property, house, etc. and reached out to share that I did not see any problems, and asked about parking as I was worried our church minibus would not be able to make it up the hairpin turns. They got back with me in a timely manner even though they were out of the country, and offered up helpful parking suggestions. I would highly recommend this property, and my students said the setting made this one of the best retreats we've had!

Hidden Mountain Treasure
Hensley Hollow Lodge lived up to all of our expectations. The views were beautiful and the lodge was stocked with everything we could have needed. The layout provided privacy for the 13 of us, and yet plenty of space for togetherness as well. Everything was just as promised and the owners were extremely responsive as we prepared for our trip. The driveway was a bit steep, so would suggest a 4WD vehicle if possible. Cell service for AT&T and Verizon were possible on the outside porch on the cabins east side ( 1 bar). Would definitely recommend Hensley Hollow Lodge for a large group or family who wants to spend some time relaxing, having fire side chats under the stars, and enjoying nature (we saw multiple deer at the cabin every day).

One of a kind amazing property
Stayed for 4 days in this massive house with a party of 9 and had PLENTY of room to spread out. Common areas are great for hanging out, and there are private areas if you're feeling the need to hang by yourself for a while. Perfect for large groups or large families. Beautiful views of Shenandoah and the surrounding hills. I will definitely consider returning to this property in the future

Great location, perfect for a weekend getaway!
This house is perfect for a large group of people wanting to spend a few days out in the mountains. There is plenty of space for activities, the kitchen is large and fully equipped, and there is an abundance of space outdoors. Ed and Meshiel were extremely responsive and helpful prior to our stay in answering any questions that we had. I would definitely return in the future.

The lodge is as always, beautiful. This was our third year at the lodge for our family Thanksgiving get together. The weather wasn't the best this year, but it really didn't matter, we all had a great time, and looking forward to next years stay.

Great Escape!!
My family and I had a wonderful time. This place was a great escape for everyone. The house provided everything to keep children and adults entertained. Movies and Games Galore. The views from the fire pit and hot tub in the evenings were amazing. Only con would be that there were no hiking trail and the mountain was pretty steep for walking/hiking. That won't stop us from returning in the future. Overall Great place to stay!

Great Family Getaway!
We had an awesome stay at Hensley Hollow Lodge! We celebrated my parent's 55th anniversary with a fall getaway. There was an assortment of entertainment for both young and old. The kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and serving dishes. The two refrigerators provided ample room for the food we brought with us. Although the leaves were still green due to all of the rain this season, I can only imagine the spectacular view when the fall foliage is at its peak!

The whole family was able to come together but still feel like we were at home. The Lodge had everything we needed and more. The family wanted to turn our anniversary into an annual event "at the lodge".

Gorgeous home, beautiful views
We spent a weekend in the mountains in August 2018. Home was large, and well appointed. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Location was fairly isolated, but only a short drive to Skyline Drive and Shenandoah. There is an area close to the house with deer corn, and we always enjoyed watching the black bears or deer off the balcony. Internet and cell service was spotty, but we knew that going in. It gave us more time to bond as a family, play games and do other things. We would certainly stay again in the future.

Third Stay - Just As Awesome
Perhaps the best indicator of an outstanding rental property is the repeat customer. This was our third summer at Hensley Hollow Lodge. There's not much more we can add to our two prior reviews. Once again, Hensley Hollow Lodge did not disappoint us. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful views and tranquil setting. Even though it rained for several days, the numerous activities in the lodge kept every family member entertained. And when we weren't enjoying all the amenities that the lodge offers, we were watching the constant stream of wildlife through the year. It seemed that at any given time, we had either deer, bear, turkeys, raccoons, and other wildlife in the front yard. We are so grateful that Hensley Hollow Lodge remains available for our rest and relaxation each summer. Each year that we come back, the owners have done additional extensive improvements to the home or property. To underscore how incredible this place is, we will be back next summer for visit number four! Thank you for making opening up your beautiful and enjoyable log home!

Excellent house for a large group
We had 8 adults and 7 kids and loved this house. Cell coverage isn’t very good and the WiFi is basic, but it was great to disconnect for a week and enjoy the area. Highly recommend this house and the owners are also very nice and helpful.

Beautiful lodge, beautiful setting, well appointed.
This was nearly ideal for our family vacation, bringing all of our adult children and grand children together. The only shortcoming was lack of a flat grassy area for the little ones to play. We were very impressed that Meshiel was waiting for us when we checked in so that she could apologize that the central air conditioning had failed and explained that she had installed three window units and fans to keep us comfortable until the repairs could be made. The "feeding station" was a hit as it provided wildlife viewing on a daily basis. (even a young bear one evening)

Beautiful, Calming Retreat!
We spent a week at the end of May at the lodge. Our initial impression was that the place was huge. We had 15 people there and there was plenty of room for everyone. You may have to plan out shower time a bit, but we didn't have any issues. The place was well stocked. When we arrived, we followed the owner in as she was bringing additional paper products to be sure we were covered for the week. We did have some problems through the week. Unfortunately, the AC picked that week to stop working. We had one night where the house was a little warm, but it was not extremely hot and we managed. After that night, the owner swung into action, a repairman was there the next day and determined that the fix would take at least a week. We went out for the day and before we arrived home, the owner had purchased and installed three window AC units and more than enough fans to keep things cool. A couple of other minor things popped up, but they were quickly dealt with. Many reviews mention the road, but I don't think it is really an issue at all anymore. The grading and gravel make it easy to navigate. The only time there was a problem was on our first day. It rained and rained enough to wash out the state-owned road. That was fixed the following day. Overall, we had a great time and would stay there again. The owners clearly are committed to making you comfortable and it was MUCH appreciated.

The lodge was just perfect! Lots of spaces for personal retreat, privacy all around. The lodge was clean and ready to go equipped with everything you could possibly want. Hot tub was amazing, lots of wood for the fire pit, every kitchen gadget you could possibly need. The view was spectacular... loved watching the resident cow "Otis" munch his way through our front yard every day. The Shorters were very nice and helped us get all the TVs working after the recent storm. Great owners who really cared about making sure we were comfortable. Thanks for your hospitality. If you are looking for a beautiful home base to relax and experience all the great things to do and see in the area, this is the place!!

Just as described!
Great property, beautiful views, just as described. Starting each day in the hot tub overlooking the mountains was amazing! The house is large and comfortably held our group. The directions to the property were perfect, the house was stocked with everything that was promised (towels, TP, paper towels, etc.) and our group had a great time. We didn't even need to leave, but one day we visited local wineries - all which were close and easy to get to. Some in our group had phone service, some didn't, but that wasn't a problem at all. Ed + Meshiel did stop by and say hi when we arrived and made sure we had everything we needed. Would return!

Family Reunion Heaven !!
Thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas visit to Hensley Hollow. Perfect for 8 Adults/9 Kiddies ages 1-8. Sleeping arrangements totally ample/comfortable. Between 3 levels and plenty of games, a lot of space to spread out. Outdoor fire pit, hot tub and feed station for the deer were a hit. Beautiful views from atop the hollow. The kitchen had everything! So convenient. A great location regardless of the season; a great launching point for nice weather activities.....more than ample space/comfort when confined to inside during cold/inclement weather. Owner was very accommodating with our schedule. House was well prepared. Highly recommend!!

It is very important to us that our guests enjoy their vacation and we do our best to make your vacation comfortable, enjoyable and unforgettable. We look forward to serving you again. We also continue to make upgrades to the lodge. Today we purchased (4) new chair height oval seat toilets to replace the four builder's grade toilets that were working just fine. Chair height is 2-1/2 inches higher. Oval seat is several inches longer. And we purchased four new shower heads with flexible hoses, to create a more enjoyable shower. We hope to install those this week. Ed & Meshiel

Great cabin! Loved it!
This cabin is amazing! We had a group of 17 and everybody loved it! The minute we arrived and walked around the house we knew we booked for too short period of time. The owner Ed had prepared a lot for us to experience, boat/canoe/fish cleaning station, outdoor Jacuzzi, deck/swing/fire pit/grill, you name it! But we only scheduled for 2 days! The view from the deck is stunning with brilliant foliage and fog flowing by from time to time. It is so tranquil at night with stars and moon above, and cow mooing and sheep meowing from a distance. It's really a soul-soothing experience, you can completely forget about the daily hustle and bustle back in the city. Inside the cabin is equally pleasant. I have never seen a rental house with such a complete stocked kitchen! The water from the well is sweet, tasted better than bottled water for sure! Towels are soft and nice quality. Bed linens are clean and beds are comfortable. All three levels are very nicely decorated. Everybody loved the "wild cat" on the beam, it's so vivid! During the stay we hiked nearby old-rag mountain, and one the way back home we drove through skyline drive, stopped by Hensley Hollow overlook point and tried to locate the cabin from distance. It was fun! Also worth mentioning, the Exxon gas station at the intersect when we got off from rt 33 to the cabin has the best fries we ever had:). Ed is a wonderful host! He gave very detailed and clear instructions, and got everything ready for us before the trip. Ed, Thank you for letting us staying at this home away from home! We will for sure visit you again in the future!

Rustic and woodsy lodge off the beaten path
Property was as described and met the needs of our large multi-family wedding party. Has all the accessories and games that you need. Internet and DirectTV worked well. As a word of caution, stairs in the house are steep and could be a challenge for some. Driveway is also steep, but we had dry weather and vehicles of all types had no problem making it up the hill. When additional linen was needed, owners were immediately accommodating. If you want to get away from it all and don’t need to make frequent trips into town, this place is ideal.

Rhonda, Thanks for taking the time to give us that good review. We really appreciate it. And we have replaced that steep spiral stairway. Kids liked it, but adults did not. And it just took too much of the living and dinning area. We custom built and installed a beautiful heavy wooden, log home style, stairway over the stairs to the lower floor. The lumber was 4" thick, 12" wide and 16' long and had to be special ordered. It is all drilled and bolted and varnished and looks great. It is very sturdy, with a slow incline or rise. We finished it last week. We look forward to serving you all again. Thanks so much, Ed & Meshiel

A fun time was had by all
Location: Great location in the Shenandoah Valley. Close to river access, Luray, hiking trails. Secluded spot with lots of room to explore. House: Kitchen is well-appointed, cabinets and drawers are labeled which is great for finding things, and there are designated empty cabinets for guests' food which I've never seen before, but is very much appreciated, both paper and dish towels are supplied. Bedrooms are nice, beds are comfortable, lots of closet and drawer space for clothes, all linens are handled by the owner. Bathrooms are nice and have plenty of towels (bath, hand and face cloths). Living areas are nice with lots of games, movies, a pool table, foosball, etc. to entertain both kids and adults. Outdoors: Again, lots of things to occupy yourself with - a hot tub, kayaks, canoe, stocked feeding station for wildlife, sheds with other items for use, a great deck with patio area below, ample parking for cars. The driveway up to the house looks daunting, but is well maintained and all 5 cars made it up with no problem. We went to Luray Caverns and the automobile museum one day, and hiked to some waterfalls another day. I highly recommend both, especially the Caverns! We were a group of 10 adults and 5 kids ranging in age from 14 to 1 and there was plenty of room for all of us and more to spare. The 9-year-old said it was the best time she had ever had. :-)

We take all of our reviews and comments very seriously. And we now feel we have corrected every problem that any guest has ever had. We were at the lodge last week upgrading some of our furniture. We replaced a twin bed with a queen bed in the East loft. And we removed the sleep sofa in the game room and replaced it with a futon. We have ordered a new 8" thick mattress for the futon which should make it more comfortable for sleeping than the sleep sofa. And we added a new night stand to the downstairs master suite. Thanks again, Ed & Meshiel

Second visit did not disappoint
This was our second visit to Hensley Hollow Lodge. We echo everything we wrote in our first review in July 2016. Hensley Hollow Lodge is the perfect place to get away, disconnect, and enjoy the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. It was the first outdoor experience for our 3 month old grandson who got to see deer and black bears in the wild on the property numerous times each day. The Shorters are gracious hosts and have gone above and beyond to provide a beautiful home with numerous amenities and activities to ensure the best possible visitor experience. it is kept very clean and very well furnished. The hot tub under the stars is a great way to finish a peaceful day. We are so blessed that we were able to enjoy Hensley Hollow Lodge again, and we will be back next year! Thanks again for making this beautiful home available to us.

Best Mountain House Ever!!
Everyone in our party (6 adults and 2 very small children) agreed this was the best mountain house they've ever stayed in. The house had everything- completely secluded up in the mountains, amazing views from inside and outside, plenty of inside space, tvs in every room, fully stocked kitchen (as a chef, I brought my fancy knives, but even those weren't needed), and a great hot tub. The deck was where we spent most of our time, and saw tons of deer and a bear on 2 separate occasion. After a few days the deer actually became boring they were there so much. House is 15 minutes to food shopping and a few decent restaurants (Ciro's had surprisingly good Italian food), and only 15 minutes to Shenandoah National Park (you can see the house from the park at Hensley Hollow overlook). We went to Luray Caverns, a 40 minute drive (and also amazing), and there is also a cool water park 20 minutes away that our kids loved. 10 minutes of every ride was just going down the mountain, so in truth most places are really close to the house. All in all we look forward to returning in the future and it'll be hard to top all the amenities.

Thanks for taking the time to give us this good review. Glad that you did good research on the information we sent you and enjoyed the nearby attractions. Also glad you could see our "friends from the forest". The young bear seems to be an orphan and is not very afraid of people. He has been sleeping in our barn some, and I got within 20' of him two weeks ago. And the deer are getting very friendly. Last week we moved a spare air compressor and extension cord to our "Mountain Shack" to enable our guests to easily fill our inner tubes or their own river toys and other floats for floating the South Fork of the famous Shenandoah River in Elkton. Maps are mounted in the game room. Hope to serve you again! Ed & Meshiel

Fantastic Stay!
Beautiful surroundings + charming, clean, and spacious lodging + responsive, accommodating hosts = a fantastic weekend. The Lodge was a perfect weekend getaway destination for our group. We felt welcome from our very first moment of arrival, as we pulled up the pebbled driveway for our first view of the Lodge, lit up with Christmas lights. The inside was equally charming and quite spacious - more than adequate for our group of a dozen adults to spread out and relax. The chilly weather (which we expected, as it was December in the mountains) kept us inside most of the weekend, but there was no lack of things to do: we enjoyed the hot tub, air hockey, foosball, and pool table, and the dining room table was perfect for board games (we brought some of our own, but the house also had several puzzles and games available). We were also impressed with the size of the movie and video game collection. The kitchen was very well stocked and labeled - we had brought some of our own cooking implements just in case, but found that the Lodge itself had pretty much everything we needed already. In short, there was plenty to do, and it was a perfect mountain weekend getaway for our group. Also, we want to thank Ed for being so responsive and flexible in all of our communications. He was a very accommodating and generous host: the instructions/directions he sent us ahead of time were perfect, and ensured that we had no problems whatsoever during our stay. We highly recommend a stay to anyone looking, and hope to make it back ourselves in the future!

What an amazing place!
I was going to write a long drawn out review, but the review written by David M nailed it for me and my family to a 'T'. The lodge is just amazing, and it's very clear that the owners have put tremendous thought, effort and care (emphasize CARE) into successfully providing their tenants with a truly 'turn-key' vacation home that caters to such a broad spectrum of interests and people. Just amazing! One thing I can add that was important for our particular situation is that the driveway splits, and gives 'no-stairs' access to the lower, and middle floors. This made it so easy to unload, and load, and particularly easy for my elderly father. Our group consisted of 8 adults, and 6 children- ages 4-16. Not one complaint or grumble over a 4 day stretch from any of 14 people in one house. I think that says it all. We can't wait to go back! If you're looking for a place to stay with a large group- look no further. this is the place.

And it gives us an opportunity to share with our guests, past and future, the many improvements we have made at the lodge recently. And we are excited to share that we have finally completed improving our driveway, by rerouting it and lessening the uphill slope. This should allow for easy access by 2wd vehicles with experienced drivers. We look forward to serving you and your extended family again. Please book early as we have nearly 100% bookings. Thanks again, from Hensley Hollow Lodge

Good location and plenty of sleeping space
HH was a great find for a family vacation with none of us having to drive more than 4 1/2 hours. We wanted to try something different than our usual beach trip and this was perfect. First off, the owners were very easy to work with and ensured that the house was in good shape. One of the difficult things about renting a house is not knowing what paper products, linens and cook things to bring. But as advertised, this place had it all! The bedrooms are varied and four of them do have nice decks off of them. This allowed us to enjoy places to gather in smaller groups which is where one can have the best talks. Unfortunately not all of our family ended up coming, so we didn't use the loft area, but I can see how helpful that would be with a bunch of kids. The game room downstairs was enjoyed by the older as younger of our group. The various gamie consoles were a treat for the kids who did come and there were plenty of games and movies from which to choose. The fire pit was used a lot and even the hot tub during the heat of July. Loved having the marshmallow holders! We were happy to be able to bring the dog, but did not expect to have to keep her on a leash when outside since it was at the top of a mountain. But there is a bear feeding area and you WILL see bears! Walking the dog was strenuous. It's steep everywhere! My disabled husband was able to stay on the main floor, but showering was tricky. The upstairs shower was small and the other upstairs bathroom was pretty small so getting in and out of the tub (with our shower chair) took two of us. But other than the shower, one could stay here with limited mobility pretty easily. We took advantage of the available kayaks and canoes and inner tubes at the Shenandoah River. We also went to Luray Caverns and the water park was visited twice during the week. We even made the half hour trip to the movies. All in all, this was a great vacation.

Better than words can ever describe
We struggle to find the appropriate words to describe the incredibly wonderful, enjoyable, and relaxing time spent at Hensley Hollow Lodge. From the warm welcome by the owners (including chilled champagne on our arrival) to the amazing rooms (including very comfortable beds) to the wondrous beauty of the surrounding mountains and the many birds, reptiles, and animals who visited the front yard, our week at Hensley Hollow Lodge is one we will remember fondly for many years. There are so many things that differentiate Hensley Hollow Lodge from every other place that we have stayed. It’s the little things that make a difference and keep guests coming back! There is nothing that you could want at Hensley Hollow Lodge. They have supplied almost everything, except for personal toiletries. While other properties often provide a towel (or maybe two) per guest, you will find each bathroom equipped with 10-12 towels. The kitchen is fully equipped, and there is an additional “guest barter” cabinet in which guests can use (and leave behind) any excess cooking ingredients. Each of the rooms comes equipped with TVs and there are numerous DirectTVs and DVD/VHS players throughout the house. The movie library is overwhelming and are arranged alphabetically. There are three generations of PlayStations in the house and too many games to count! Everything in Hensley Hollow Lodge is meticulously organized and labeled. No guessing what’s in each cabinet – each door and drawer is clearly labeled. Every TV and DVD/VCR and the remotes that go with them are labeled Every light switch is clearly labeled as to what it controls. Hensley Hollow Lodge is tucked away enough for the privacy you desire when you want to get away, but close enough to the local amenities that you need. 10 minutes or less will put you on Skyline Drive or in town. We’ve stayed at several mountain homes, and each had their own flavor of natural beauty around them and encounters with wildlife. But none come close to Hensley Hollow Lodge. Seeing the deer, raccoons, and bears feeding 50 yards from the house (including daily visits from a mother bear and two cubs) throughout the day and night was exciting. Being so close to Shenandoah National Park, there is pristine beauty to be enjoyed from the decks, the benches or swings, or the hot tub. If there is a little bit of heaven to be found on earth, part of it can be found at Hensley Hollow Lodge!

Thank you for taking the time to give us such a great review. Thank you for being so kind and generous to our staff. It is difficult for anyone to maintain such a rental property unless nearby. Four years ago, we purchased a small owner's cabin about 700 feet below the lodge so we could spend more time there for maintenance and improvements. And two years Ago, I retired, allowing us to inspect, repair and improve the lodge every week. Thanks to your good communication we knew to place corn at our feeding stations for the deer. And they are becoming quite friendly. It will be our pleasure to serve you again.

Great Place and great views!!!
Had a nice time at Hensley Hollow Lodge on out annual motorcycle trip. 10 guys and there was plenty of room. Had a "little" issue navigating the motorcycles up the driveway but Ed was there to help out and was very helpful - even taking a couple of us to get groceries in his truck!! The lodge is great and views are amazing. campfires at night were awesome. Had a great time !! Thanks again Ed!!!

Paul, Thanks for taking the time to give us that good review. It was our pleasure to serve and to meet you and your group. You all were such a nice group of men that I was pleasantly surprised. We often have the opportunity to inspect and repair things and the pleasure of meeting our guests since I have retired and it helps us to better serve our guests. Sorry you guys went up the wrong driveway the first time. I will rope that one off this weekend. We have been removing protruding rocks from the yard to facilitate mowing and stocking a new supply shed with the unlimited paper and cleaning products these last two weeks. In September we plan to extend our driveway and enlarge our parking area to accommodate up to 20 vehicles. Thanks again for the pleasure of meeting you and your friends, Ed

Awesome Vacation Home
Hensley Hollow Lodge vacation home really felt like home. My family and I (all 12 of us) truly enjoyed our vacation. The kitchen had everything, I mean everything we needed to cook, eat and drink. The whole house was clean and cozy and we'll supplied. We definitely recommend the Hensley Hollow Lodge vacation home.

Very nice location
When we arrived we were cought up in the snow storm, the owners were very nice and gave us all the help we needed. They gave us extra night and food for free due to snow. Definitely recommend this location. Sincerely Shaun

Shaun, Thanks for the good review. I admit, that 26" of snow was difficult for us to remove on the inclined roads. Our 4WD backhoe started right up the next time we tried. We enjoy meeting our guests from all over the world when we can. It was our pleasure to meet you and your guests. My congratulations to you and your family for pursuing and achieving higher education. We look forward to serving you again. Ed Shorter

Great Weekend
I statyed at Hensley Hollow lodge for a weekend to celebrate my birthday with a small group of friends. It was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The house is beautiful and the views from the house can't be beat especially in the fall with all the beautiful colors! I will definitely be returning next year.

Felicia, Thanks for taking the time to give us a review. The fall colors are best between October 15 and November 15. And our lodge can be seen from the Hensley Hollow Overlook on Skyline Drive. I am excited to say that last week, we purchased a large 4WD backhoe with loader and an extended hoe. We will continue to enlarge our parking area, and improve our yard, landscape, and driveway. And we will continue to develop the adjacent 7 acre lot for a possible homesite. Thanks! Ed & Meshiel Shorter

Wonderful time in an exclusive place
We spent a wonderful time in Hensley Hollow Lodge, it's a great place to relax and get ready for hiking, cycling, running as we did. Lodge is beautifully decorated and views from the living room, terrace and spa are splendid. You will experience surrounding wildlife, deers, hawks, racoons and even black bears. Ed is a very friendly person who will try to accommodate your needs.

Thanks for taking the time to give us a review. It was our pleasure to meet you and to serve you at the lodge. We will be making several more upgrades there during the next few weeks and the remainder of the school year. We have posted signs at the deer feeding station and keep the corn in the EDSHED. Last week Meshiel watched a small black bear lay down and eat the corn for almost an hour at 10:00 AM.

Wonderful
Had a lovely week here with my family and my pet, spent my days hiking in the mountains and nights at relaxing in the house. It's very roomy and comfortable and the views are awesome. This is my second time here and I will go back again.

Bob, Thanks for the review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at the Hensley Hollow Lodge and look forward to serving you again. We were at the lodge these past 9 days and built a firewood rack and loaded it with firewood. We also worked on the driveway, trying to make it more storm proof due to occasional heavy rains in the mountains. And we repaired our new 4 wd mower and can now safely mow the steep 1 acre lawn. We also have been seeing dozens of deer at our corn and salt block feeding stations. And we have seen several black bear and Cubs. We do not allow hunting on our 21 acre retreat. Thanks again and we look forward to serving you again.

Amazing location - super friendly hosts - well equipped house
We were a large group of cyclists, including 10 teenagers and the house was perfect for our needs. The kitchen was very well equipped, which is a big plus when you have to cook for 10 teenagers. All the rooms were very clean and comfortable. we had plenty of space for our bikes and luggage everywhere. The owners was very helpful when we needed them and very friendly. We definitely would recommend the house to anybody and we plan on going back!

Thanks for the good review. We enjoyed meeting your group from Canada. I hope you were able to fulfill your biking needs. It was great of the adults to prepare that homemade spaghetti sauce for everyone. It really looked delicious. We have enjoyed meeting groups from all over the world, including Canada, England, and Korea. Since we have retired, and have an owner's cabin nearby, and are able to meet most of our rental groups, and we are able to keep everything at the lodge clean and in working order. And we are able to better meet their needs. When we are given advance notice, we are able to fulfill some special requests. Family fun - relaxing and adventurous
Stayed here with young kids ages 10 months to 9 years and grandparents for part of the stay. Everyone had a great time. Plenty of room and lots to do for everyone. Two master suits accommodated two couples and the loft area was great for the young kids. There was rooms for several more people that we never used. Kitchen was well stocked and dining room table fit everyone. Kids loved playing hide in seek, video games and air hockey. Very nice to soak in the hot tub. You can see skyline drive from the property. We had a minivan and had no problem with the driveway - it is steep but there was no issues navigating it. And we had no problem finding the property. The rental process was very easy and smooth with no issues or concerns. Lots to do nearby and I highly recommend Little Black Rock hike in Shenandoah for families with young kids. I would highly recommend the lodge for any combination of family or group.

Sarah, Thanks for the review. We enjoyed meeting you and your family and serving you at our lodge. We are at the lodge again this week, and have made quite a few improvements since your stay. We added 200 tons of soil and 12O tons of rock and raised and widened our driveway. We removed that poplar stump behind the lodge and expanded our parking area by 2000 sq ft. We can accomodate over 25 parked vehicles now.And we cut a new driveway to the top of our adjacent 7 acre lot. And thanks for your kids finding and returning the "wallet" with credit and debit cards the previous tenant left. We sent it to them the following day and they were very grateful. Ed & Meshiel

Hensley Hollow Lodge
We loved staying at Hensley Hollow Lodge! We rented Hensley Hollow for a long weekend to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday with family and friends. Everyone had a fantastic time. It is set in such a gorgeous spot in the Shenandoah, with beautiful views all around. The Lodge was so cozy! The kitchen had everything we could need to prepare all sorts of big meals. The whole house was well stocked with linens and paper products. There were 24 of us on Saturday, we ranged in age from 2 to 75 and everyone had a great time. Some of us could relax and talk or read upstairs, while others played games down stairs and it was big enough for everyone to gather all at once for dinner, a toast and birthday cake. Ed and Meshiel are so friendly and responsive, I look forward to renting Hensley Hollow again someday for another family reunion. I highly recommend Hensley Hollow Lodge!!

Thanks for the good review Jackie. It was our pleasure to meet you and your family. Since we retired from the nuclear field a few months ago we have been able to stay at the owner's cabin about 800 feet away and meet many of our guests. This has been our pleasure. It also allows us to learn more about our guests and our clientele and to determine what their needs are. This past week we install some scraps on the hot tub cover to keep the wind from blowing it off. We also split a load of firewood for the fire pit. And we installed Hughes net Internet service and Wi-Fi within the lodge. On April 14 we will be upgrading our Direct TV service to include three remote Genie wireless receivers. This also will give us high definition service and access to local channels. These Three receivers will be in addition to the two stationary receivers we already have, giving us five direct TV receivers for our 10 televisions within the lodge. It truly was our pleasure to meet you and your family and we hope to serve you again. Thanks

Perfect getaway for summer friends
A group of 16 friends from around the country descended upon this beautiful cabin tucked away in the mountains at the end of February this year. We see each other once a year in the summer, but decided we needed a winter gathering as well. Hensley Hollow was the absolute perfect location! Plenty of room for everyone throughout the cabin. We had a good number of cooks in the group, so lots of time was spent in the kitchen. I was thrilled to see how well-stocked it was! The addition of a hot tub just before our arrival just added to the utopian feel. We planned an outing to the Luray Caverns, which were amazing, but the highlight was simply being able to spend quality time together watching movies we loved but hadn't seen in years (gotta love old school VHS), playing games, and filling the cabin with laughter. Because of the distance some people traveled, they packed quite lightly - which worked out just fine since the cabin is well stocked for a large number of people. The hardest part of the weekend was leaving our beautiful weekend home and heading back to real life. Thank you for helping to make our first (hopefully annual) gathering one to remember!

Thanks so much for the review and thanks for allowing us to serve you at Hensley Hollow Lodge. We continue to make improvements and upgrades to better serve our guests. We will be working up there this week to inventory the 150 new Play Station 2 & 3 games we recently purchased, to sew some more grass seed on our lawn, and to clear some brush on the hill behind the lodge to prepare for widening our parking area and improving our driveway. We also are working to prepare our small owner's cabin for guests in the event of larger crowds. Last week, we installed a new custom made hot tub cover and a new 16' wide gate and post I place of the 12' wide gate and post at the bottom of our driveway. We hope to serve you again at the Hensley Hollow Lodge.

Super Bowl Weekend!
We have been going to Massanutten every year for the past 8 years for super bowl weekend and this was by far the best weekend we have been. The house and the view was spectacular. There were plenty of things to do for 7 children ages 4 to 12. The 7 adults had plenty to do also. Having the house stocked with linens and paper products was greatly appreciated when it came to packing. The house had everything you could think of to cook with. We had a blast catching up with our friends. It was secluded yet just minutes from the slopes and waterpark. All you need to bring is clothes and go to the grocery store when you get there. Loved it! We plan on meeting there with our friends again next year. Highly recommended.

Thanks so much for the positive review. It was our pleasure to serve you. I retired six months ago and Meshiel and I go to the lodge nearly every week to make repairs and upgrades. In the last six months, we have completely regarded the yard and the driveway and greatly increased our parking area and restocked our kitchen. Just this week, we repaired the loft futon and checker board table and painted the northwest knee wall and the north wall behind the futon. We also installed a new halogen light over the outside stainless steel grill, that shines directly over the cooking area. And we replaced the outside motion detector light over the hot tub and installed a new controller that is more easily read, for the hot tub. We have an appointment to meet with our excavator to further increase our parking area and to begin developing the adjacent six acre lot. Thanks again, Ed & Meshiel Shorter

HHL was the destination for a very special family Christmas this year. Everyone loved the lodge! Even our teens were content to stay and play and enjoy family time together. The lodge was spacious but cozy & comfortable. There was so much to do! Our indoor favorites were pool, air hockey and cooking together. Outdoors we enjoyed our walks, the evenings around the fire pit and even cooking on the gas grill. Everyone wanted to stay longer. We would certainly recommend the lodge.

Spectacular Mountain Retreat
Ed and Meshiel have an amazing home! The lodge was perfect for a weekend with family and friends!! We recently stayed at HHL with a group of 12 people. The lodge is huge and had PLENTY of room. Ed and Mishiel were there to great us and make sure our arrival was successful. We invited them to dinner our first night and enjoyed their company very much! Not only did the lodge have plenty of room, but it had everything we needed; plenty of plates/cookware/sheets/towels for a large group. All and all just really well set up for a relaxing weekend. The view from the lodge speaks for itself overlooking the Shenandoah forest. The fire pit was awesome and provided hours of entertainment for our group. Ed provided plenty of firewood for us and we were sure to use it! Skyline drive is a short 15 minute trip from the house and provided great views and hiking (hiking trail about 20 minutes away, off skyline drive). I would not hesitate to stay at the Lodge again and highly recommend it!!

A perfect reunion destination!
Eight friends and I gathered here for the first time since the 1970's & we couldn't have found a better place to re-connect! The only time we left was to walk down the driveway to the next hilltop and back. The weather was beautiful. We enjoyed hanging out on the porches and chatting throughout our 3 night stay, as we had ALOT of catching up to do! This lodge fit our personalities to a T. We're not demanding or unrealistic, so a few stink bugs (outside) and a couple of dull knifes in the kitchen (as noted in previous posts) didn't hamper our good time. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and very relaxing. We enjoyed meeting the owners, who were attentive (but not intrusive). After our departure, our deposit was returned very quickly - in entirety. Thank you, Ed and Meshiel!

Jan, Thanks for the positive review. It was our pleasure meeting your group and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We hope to serve you again. As we explained, we retired two months ago and are making major improvements in the lodge and the 23 acres of mountain land. The Chinese stink bugs you saw outside the lodge, are an epidemic in 16 states, but two weeks ago, we completed sealing and treating the lodge, especially around the back porch, and they did not survive long. This past week, we sharpened those kitchen knives, added 6 new lamps to the loft, added an electric fireplace mantle and heater to a first floor bedroom, hung several new pictures, cleaned and seeded around the 25 landscape boulders along the driveway and installed 22 high quality solar landscape lights between the boulders, installed a new 16' privacy gate, and we cleared and reseeded the 200 year old Hensley family cemetery. We are happy to say that we now have a beautiful GREEN landscaped lawn, after spending over $10,000 and hydroseefing and reseeding 7 times over the past year. And the solar lights add to the night time ambiance. We also learned this weekend that U.S. Citizens older than 62 can purchase a lifetime pass to the National Forest and Blue Ridge Parkway for only $10. This covers the car with passengers. The park is only 5 minutes from the lodge and the lodge can be seen from the Hensley Hollow Overlook. The fall colors are at their peak now and there are thousands traveling the Parkway and taking photographs. Thanks for letting us serve you at the Hensley Hollow Lodge, Ed & Meshiel Shorter.

Very Relaxing
We had a very relaxing time while staying at Hensley Hollow Lodge. Mornings were spent on the deck, overlooking the valley, with our coffee/tea and books. The days were spent in the Shenandoah National Forest, hiking. The evenings were spent on the deck, again, watching the family of dear wandering around the front yard. We had a daily visit from a hummingbird, checking up on us, I guess, to ensure we were having a good time. At night we would pop in a movie and cook up some popcorn in the stove top pop corn maker. Everyone had a really enjoyable time.

The Perfect Place for Family Reunions and Retreats
Our family are regular guests at Hensley Hollow Lodge and we always enjoy our stay at this beautiful mountain retreat on 23 acres of secluded land. We found the lodge to be clean and well-stocked. This lodge offers quality bedding for over 20 guests and five decks with scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The owners furnish unlimited paper products, firewood and propane gas at no extra cost. Their new maintenance team is on call 24 hours a day and takes excellent care of the lodge, the ground and the new driveway. We are looking forward to our next memorable reunion in this lovely home.

Great Mountain Cabin!
Hensley Hollow Lodge is a really great cabin retreat. It is situated on the edge of the prettiest valley. We were lucky to go after they got a foot of snow and had a blast playing in the snow and sledding down the hill in front of the house. It's very close to skiing at Massanutten, which we did one day. The kitchen is well stocked. The two loft wings are unfortunately open to the living room so there is some issue with sounds and privacy up there. It helps they have doors but would be better walled off I think. Totally fine though I expect for most families with kids.

Excellent Mountain Home
We had a wonderful time in this home. The fact that internet was not present added to our enjoyment since we performed a lot more group activities. Kitchen is equipped with all the utensils and tools (although suggest replace the knives with a sharper set (:->)) game room downstairs is adequate for kids and adults and the living room offers a great view of the mountain where we spent most of our time. The loft had plenty of beds for the kids and the deck was great for morning cup of tea and evening snacks with nice and fresh mountain air. The house felt very private. Will recommend this to our friends.

Hensley Hollow in the Fall
Our group had a wonderful stay in Hensley Hollow Lodge. The lodge was tucked away into a hollow near the Shenandoah National Park. Great place to see the fall colors and to tour wineries in the area. The house was very accommadating, well stocked, the kitchen had everything needed to cook, the rooms were beautiful, relaxing, peaceful, and the scenery was amazing. We thought we were going up to the mountain for a youth retreat, but in reality we were going to God's country. Our youth retreat theme was 'To Touch The Heavens', and by God, we did touch the heavens! This will truly be a memorable experience for us. The youth did not want to leave :). We were also in awe on how much the owners consider God in their life throughout their detail in the home, it's truly blessed. They are amazing people, and we will certainly keep them in our prayers. Henseley Hollow Lodge
We had a great time at Henseley Hollow. Our biggest issue was the the gravel driveway up to the house. Very difficult even with 4 wheel drive. We brought motorcycles on a trailer but had to trailer them down to a clearing on the road, take the bikes off and then return the trailer to the lodge. Motorcycles don't handle loose gravel very well. Wish we had known how steep it was . Would have probably not brought the motorcycles. Only got to ride 1 day because it was such a pain. the beds in the loft weren't very comfortable. My nephew ended up slleping on the couch most nights Could use more bowls with lids and small and medium size pots.Just minor issues. Would have loved to go there in the fall. I'm sure it's spectatcular.

I appreciate the 5 star rating. However, I'm concerned that many of our prospective guests reading your review will decide they cannot traverse the driveway and decide not to rent from us.Our efforts to repair the driveway in the rain during your stay were also not mentioned in your review. We have sent you emails and offered you an additional discounted stay and shared the facts but we did not receive a reply. 1.WE HAVE ALWAYS GUARANTEED ACCESS TO EVERY GUEST REGARDLESS OF THE COST.We visit the lodge regularly and make any repairs or improvements and scrape the driveway if needed. We have never had anyone say they could not access our lodge. Our guests and our cleaning staff were able to make it to the lodge in 2 wheel drive cars with front wheel drive. My 4WD truck made it there fine with and without the gravel.I'm sorry that by the time you stayed there it was just after the county had experienced several rains of 4 inches or greater in only a few weeks that washed out and damaged several county roads. If you had called us as stated in our generic email, we could have reminded you that you are allowed to park at the little cabin at the bottom of the driveway of our lodge. You could have parked the trailer and bikes there. We did bring gravel up to the lodge and spread it in the driveway during the rain before you departed. Soon after your stay (the rainy week),we met with our excavator and agreed to improve the driveway and the landscaping. We also purchased a new 4WD 41 horse power tractor with a loader and a blade so we can maintain the property in a timely manner, without relying on an outside contractor. 2. WE PURCHASED NEW UPGRADED THICK MATTRESS AND BOX SPRING SETS FOR ALL 8 TWIN BEDS AND DISCARDED THE ORIGINAL BUNK BED MATTRESSES, OVER A YEAR AGO, WHEN WE PUT THE 8 TWIN BEDS IN THE LOFT. We replace them regularly. During our 9 years of operation, we never had anyone complain or say that our mattresses in the loft were so uncomfortable that someone could not sleep on them. You stated in the contract there are 3 kids in your group (5 yrs. old and under). I assume your nephew as one of the kids; I don’t think it is valid to trust his judgment and motive for not sleeping in the loft. I would think that a 5 or under kid would be scared to sleep alone in the loft and may simply want to be closer to the adults. 3.We did not have many small pots and pans as we normally have larger rental groups. We purchased sets of bowls with lids after your review.

Our Christmas Vacation In the Mountains
We had a wonderful time in your home! We actually got snow! We ended up having to pull my moms car and my friends van up the mountain with our Jeep Rubicon! It was very interesting as it was a mix of sleet and snow! It did a great job, I must say! ANYWAY...I do believe that if you rent this place in the winter then you will definitely need a 4 WD!! The beds were comfortable and everything was very clean! The view was beautiful! We saw deer trek through the driveway! The pluses about this place were: The scenery, the privacy, the cleanliness, well stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, dishes for the most part, dish washing soap, the pool table, and the jacuzzis. It had a large selection of DVD's and VCR tapes. The negatives were: IT was loud! It took us a while to get used to the fact that when we were standing in the kitchen and heard something like a bowling ball rolling above, it was only the kids playing and nothing was going to fall on our heads! If you wanted to take a nap during the day, then you could hear the kids playing upstairs or even the adults playing board games at the table in the dining room. This was only a slight problem for us! We had to go to the Family Dollar store at the bottom of the hill to buy a large enough stock pot and skillet to feed our crew spaghetti as we had 6 big guys with us! There was a large pot but waay to big for spaghetti..more for crab legs or something. That wasn't a big problem either. There were alot of games but they were older ones and we couldn't play alot due to missing pieces so you may want to bring your own, like we did do to someone else's comment before we rented it. Just mentioning the little things that you may not think of. We also had to change about 4 light bulbs..which the bulbs were there for us! One last thing was that there isn't much of a flat ground around the house. We had to be very careful with the little ones when they were running around..especially sleigh riding so that they wouldn't fly over the hill. It had huge boulders around the driveway that if people sat on made great pics! Overall, this vacation was very memorable and relaxing and the house is absolutely beautiful! I would definitely rent again! Oh and it is WAY to big in my opinion for a romantic getaway! lol Thanks again for allowing us to rent your home and may you have a wonderful New Year!

Graduation weekend at Hensley Lodge
Hensley Hollow Lodge provided everything we needed for a college graduation celebration with family and friends. There was plenty of hot water, space to move around, and entertainment for the children, especially in the game room. Since we did a lot of cooking, the kitchen came equipped with everything we needed, plus more. The fire pit was great for relaxing, and catching up with all the guests, even though we got rained out one night. You cannot change the weather. The site was quite accurate in describing the lodge, and it was well maintained and clean. Just a note, follow the directions to the lodge step by step, and you will have no problems finding it. We truly had a great experience, and would totally recommend Hensley Lodge. Thanks for a wonderful time!

PEACEFUL RETREAT
Wonderful place to get away from it all, peace and quiet, secluded, great views. Great as a home base to go sightseeing, shopping, wine tasting etc. in the area, or to just hang out and relax. Provides all the comforts of home, spacious rooms, well-equipped kitchen, gas BBQ, fire pit etc. No internet access, which would be useful for people who need to work on their vacation. The property is well-maintained and clean. The owner is responsive, well-organized and reliable, excellent communication! We have been here several times, we call it our "home away from home". We love it!

Family gathering made perfect
We joined various family members from TN, FL, MD, and DC at Hensley Hollow Lodge for a long weekend. With a total of 16 adults, the house was plenty spacious! Our weekend was spent sitting by the firepit with a fire going almost the entire time, playing pool and other games, cooking big meals, talking on the porches, sitting by the firepit laughing, sitting by the firepit reading, catch a trend here? The kitchen has what you need to feed lots of people--and I am picky on that front! There are 4 full bathrooms and even with many people trying to bathe at about the same time, we had no issues with hot water. The photos simply do not show how spacious and well-appointed this house really is--although I am not sure I could do a better job. We wandered to Luray Caverns (nice!), the Wisteria Farm and Vineyard, and hiking in the mountains. The Lodge can be seen from an overlook on Skyline Road (yes, that close) and the short jaunt to hike was a bonus. We also enjoyed getting sandwiches from West Main Market and Deli in Luray--wonderful gourmet sandwiches--for a picnic at the vineyard. If I had to change anything at all, I would add two or three long classic wooden picnic tables outside below the firepit for a big picnic style lunch or dinner outside. Although there is lots of outdoor furniture, I tend to like the all-at-one-monsterous-table setup for family gatherings. This would be a perfect place for anyone with a large extended family, a church retreat, or couples gathering. I am not positive but think it is (or could be with a small one-step ramp to main level) handicapped friendly--all living needs can be found on main level and lower level would also be accessible from below. If you have fewer people--no problem: just use 1 or 2 levels and it doesn't seem massive or empty. Enjoy! We certainly did!

Great time.
This is the second year we have rented this house for our men's group for a weekend retreat. This place is fantastic!!! It is very spacious, comfortable, and well appointed. We have no complaints. Hopefully we'll use this again next year.

A Gem in the Woods!
This home was an absolute beauty! The pictures of this home can not compare to the experience of seeing this home in person. My family and I had a wonderful weekend here. This home left no detail unturned. There were plenty of games and movies for the kids and plenty of movies and entertaining space for the adults. There was plenty of space to move around, so a large group will never feel crowded. The Kitchen had eveything a cook would ever need. The fire pit was an added bonus. The children roasted marshmallows, while the adults shared great stories. I can tell that your home was a labor of Love; it shows in every detail. ( The pictures were great!) I would recommend that you own a four wheel drive to access the property, if you have front wheel drive, you can park at the bottom of the driveway and walk up (well worth it!). Communication with the owner was great. He quickly answered any questions or concerns that we had. I appeciate that. This home is close to Massanutten Resort and close to grocery and shopping areas. I could go on and on, but I challange you to try it for yourself. I would highly recommend this home for your getaway.

Thanks!! I built Hensley Hollow Lodge myself and I maintain this home for family reunions and church retreats. And even during a recession, feedback like this keeps me going. Ed Shorter
